    Fold, iron, pin and go slow in short increments as advised above. Once you get the hang of it, you can hand roll, go fast on long stretches and proceed to step two of the lesson plan with your new best friend Mr. Seam Ripper.

    That's hilarious!

    That being said, the issue is a constant one so the information is useful for people without a lot of sewing experience. I've been sewing so long that I have no problem doing a 1/8" double folded hem by hand but I still occasionally use clips to hold fabric in place -- especially something like silnylon! I like using clips over pins because I find them quicker to attach and they aren't poking holes in my fabric (which really doesn't make much of a difference except philosophically).
