my friend just got a cheapie sleeping bag and wants to turn it into a UQ for car camping.
is there an issue with moisture?
can it be made similar to the no sew PLUQ?
im thinking take and cut it in half length wise, and maybe just tie some shock cord threw some sewn holes in the corners. just simple.

I'm doing the same thing, I'm following creativekayt's UQ and sclittlefield's IX UQ designs...about 60"x48" no pleats or darts, ribbon on edges for shock cord channels, if it works, I'll prolly add IX layers to take it colder...not lightweight, but it's all I can afford right now!
Should be no reason for moister issues.
If it's a rectangle bag, you could do just what you described. I'd sew two lines of stitching, one on each side of were you want to cut it. Then when you cut between the lines, the insulation will be held in place.
If you want to make the edges neater, leave enough fabric were you cut it to fold & sew a hemmed edge.

this wont get much use, so its not a whole big deal about being fancy. theyre fairweather campers, and it wont see too much use.

The above post is good for car camping because it does not destroy the sleeping bag. I did the same thing my first time out without sewing grosgrain loops. I tied larksheads in each corner and rigged it best I could

I may have to try this out this weekend, I have a supply of old decent bags. I like the idea of not destroying it and thus keeping usability in case of suspension failure.

I tried this with a cheap bag, and my sewing machine had a hell of a time with the thickness. Personally, I'd open it, lay it out, and fold the outsides to the middle.
The corners are big enough to just tie something to. You'll need a bungee cord or multiple runs of shock cord for suspension due to the weight.
Most of the time, you can melt a hole in the top and bottom binding to run a shock cord to do the gathers....
I did this, but it wasn't super successful... the bag was so heavy, it was hard to get it suspended right. I ended up using paracord on one end and a bungee on the other. It worked, but it was far from ideal...

I made two of these for my mom using children's sleeping bags. We found some cheap at Walmart and just cut them in half, basically, and then sewed in some loops on each corner for shock chord. They're nice and wide and work great. Oh, we also sewed loops in the middle of the under quilt with some shock cord to "button up" the under quilt around the hammock.

i can sew buttons on and stitch up lacerations in back country, but no skill using a thread injector, and @ my age, (Older than Old Gringo) in fact wished I'd known about hammocks long time ago so Noah and i could have slept better on the ark, anyway I digress, instead of sewing the the loops i put on snaps and another set used brass grommets, worked well, and friends still using.anyway worked for me,
