When I first started hanging, I made a sleeping bag UQ. I cut down an old bag and even sewed in some darts to make it hug the hammock better. It turned out so-so, and with an extra space blanket sandwiched under the hammock and wool blanket inside and under me, I made it down to 31° once.
What this did do, more than anything else, was teach me how UQs work. When I did receive my Incubator (about 3 weeks later), I was better prepared to suspend it and understand how it worked.
I still have that homemade UQ, and may offer it to someone locally trying to stay warm above 50°. It's not a thing of beauty, but it works.
