I put on gross grain on mine without a binding foot and I didn't find it difficult at all. However, I am actually taking a break right now from making another tarp and this time I am not using gross grain to save on weight. Either way you go, I'm sure yours is going to turn out awesome. Good luck dude and I look forward to your photos.

After being up all night sewing the night before a 6AM flight, I decided I could finish sewing on the nylon webbing tie-outs on the road. So, a couple of sunny afternoon sittin-on-the-dock scenarios I got them all sewn in and was able to pitch it for the first time at Lake Wenatchee:

I was a bit delighted that it didn't rain my whole 2 weeks in Washington, but would have liked to put the tarp through a downpour (even if I hadn't sealed it yet at that point.) Now it's all sealed and spending time in the yard with my new 3-Season Yeti, up in brand new DIY snakeskins when not in use.

    Thanks for the tips everyone!

I'd love to know how your tarp turned out without the grosgrain ridgeline? I too am considering skipping the grosgrain and going with a French Seam.
