Pick 2. Light, compressable, cheap. Normally u can't have all three. That said insultex is light and cheap though not real compressable.

Go into a outfitter or quality supply store that carries a variety of items you want to look at..look at the "cheap" bags and what they are made of..and check out their compression abilities..sizes,,,,then check out the quality products..and how they compress...the value of your money is compromised in the quality of the product. In other words,,you get what you pay for. the trade off in cheap and compressablity and lightness,,will be the fact that the product will not give you the degree rating your looking for as well.. Try looking for sales,,or maybe even slightly used that someone has for sale but in the long run..what you pay for will last you longer in the long run as well.

Yeah that's a tough one. Even if you DIY your own it's not gonna be exactly cheap. I think my personal reccomendation would be to save your money, take a second job, sell some stuff you don't use, and get yourself a good down bag.

If there was a cheap insulation that packs and works well down to 20 degrees...don't you think every Walmart would be full of these sleeping bags?

As said, this is for sure a case of you get what you pay for.

I might suggest though, hit up Craigslist and look for used down sleeping bags. We got a couple $250 Mountain Hardware sleeping bags for $50 each by keeping an eye on Craigslist. Sometimes good deals can be found at thrift stores...though not by me apparently.

I am about to start a diy UQ and the "cheapness" of primaloft finally won me over. They say it's the most compressible synthetic, but i know its not as light as down. you may want to look into that.

I just got this top quilt and cut a vee in it. It is very very light and it came in like 2-3 days. I will be using it this weekend on the Oregon Hang. So looking forward to it. This bag only cost $ 103.00.....

That is a pretty good deal. Although, at 18-
19oz. and 55Fdeg the weight:warmth ratio seems kinda low. Of course one could augment that rating with a liner and/or a cover down to 30Fdeg maybe. Perhaps it could be opened at one end seam and overstuffed slightly. It certainly looks like it would be workable and at a decent price; might buy one myself.

Down is reasonably price in my opinion if its a DIY type of project. Otherwise, anything down will do some damage to your wallet.
