    Cheap Tarps

Has anyone ordered from Tarpaflex? They have light duty 2.7oz/sq yd, 900 denier, tarps in blue, green, and brown. They have a wide range of sizes to choose from...

    8X10 - $5.92
    10X10 - $7.40
    10X12 - $8.88

They have smaller and larger. This was just to give an idea of prices.

    Shipping is only $2.99

    Web site address is http://www.tarpaflex.com.

They look a lot like the tarps you can get from Walmart. Which don't really hold out to well and they're heavy too.

Agreed. I fear they wouldn't hold up very well or for very long.

Yeah the price looks right. If you stick with hammocking I think you'll soon grow out of it. If you're experimenting it's probably great value, but if you know hammocking is gonna be your thing put your money towards a better tarp. Better shouldn't have to break the bank either. Look at Keltys, also Gear Guide tarps, will probably be available again towards the end of the year.

I just find it amazing that a thread started by what is quite possibly spammer can actually get a discussion going.

But in all seriousness if anyone is looking for a decent tarp, that's not to heavy and the Silnylon/Spin/Cuben is out of your budget check out Campmor for their coated nylon tarps. You can end up with a decent sized tarp for around or less than $50 and it will not be nearly as heavy as the Wally World Blue and will last longer than a plastic dropcloth solution.

They also have a few silnylon tarps that won't break the bank.

A have no affiliation with Campmor BTW nor any of it's affiliates Do they even have affiliates?

Is there a post anywhere here which describes the difference between these materials, i.e. Silnylon, coated nylon, cuben fiber (ok, I know that one)?

You know, weight, durability, waterproof-ness, sewability etc.

    Thanks!

    • Cuben Fiber: Newest and Lightest, seems to be quite durable.
    • Spinn: Second Lightest, Durability is considered good.
    • Silnylon: The workhorse of tarp material, most common among backpackers due to good weight and durability. Heavy rain may result in misting through the tarp.
    • PU Coated Nylon: Heavier than the above options, Good durability, will not mist like Silnylon does. Cheapest of the nylon based options.
    • Polyvinyl (WalMart Blue, Home Depot Brown, Lowes Grey): Heavy, does not pack well. Normally comes with weak grommets. Weaker than they feel. A small tear can turn into a catastropic rip fast. Cheapest solution, usually under $10 USD.

The "blue" tarps are about the same weight as the PU coated tarpos such as Kelty Noah
They're stronger than you might think. I have used them as covers for my boat, so they are good for at least 60 mph. The grommetts are weak, so use the none invasive tarp clips (from Tarpaflex also) or stone in loop. Folds and rolls up larger than a Kelty Noah.

Thanks for all the replies. I am in the process of a DIY WBB and was looking around for tarps. Didn't mean for my post to appear as spam. I may just go ahead an make my own. I bought some silnylon, but not quite enough for a large tarp. I bought 4 yds, and its 65" wide. Should I just leave it as a rectangle, or make it asymmetrical?
