    Ground Pitching

    HOLD THE GUN FIRE!

I have a trek coming up where ground pitching is going to be required one night. Depending on the conditions (bugs) I may or may not use the hammock. I am going to use my trekking poles to string up the tarp so that won't be an issue.

Those of you that have ground pitched - what did you put on the ground to protect the hammock? I'd rather not throw in a poly tarp because of the weight but it would be a cheap solution.

The area I'll be in is near Dolly Sods, WV in a clear-cut landscape. If we are doing the same trek as the last one there one camp will be in the woods, or close enough to hang, and the other is on bare, rocky, hilly ground.

A simple sheet of 1.1 silnylon (2nds) or tyvek will protect the hammock.

My question is ... what will protect you?

Therm A Rest pad. I've slept on a rock cliff wrapped up in a tarp like a hot dog so the ground pitch won't be anything like I haven't done. The only regret I had with the hot dog is I couldn't seal up the tarp against the ground well enough to keep wind blown sand out of, well... everything. Sand in my mouth, my ears, uh.. it keeps going. I found sand in my gear weeks later. I wouldn't be surprised to find sand somewhere in my gear even now.

I keep my milsurplus poncho for occasions like that. It means that I pay a ~12 ounce penalty over a driducks poncho, but it's tough enough to act as an emergency ground sheet and not complain overly much (heck, there's a video somewhere on YouTube of a guy using the same poncho as a hammock with two lines of paracord on either side as suspension!).

A large Lawn and Leaf bag is lighter than both, can be stuffed with leaf litter for comfort, and used as a poncho in a pinch. I like multiple use item.

A cheap ground cover that has been getting good response has been the polycro plastic used for restricting heat loss on windows in the winter (window heat shrink). Very cheap for small portion and surprisingly durable. And extremely lite, lighter than tyvek. I picked some up at the local hardware store and it has been holding up well on multiple uses for bivy camping. Not too noisy, puncture resistant, and works as a workable pack liner if required.
