In SC in September you should be fine w a blue pad under you and a sleeping bag as a TQ.

Rjcress (not sure of handle) has a thread where he sews loops onto a sleeping bag and uses it as a UQ w/o destroying the bag. This means carrying 2 bags, one UQ and one TQ. Ok if car camping.

I rigged a UQ by attaching a sleeping bad using larksheads. It was hard to get a tight seal.

Creativekat (??) Has a thread where she converts a $10 Walmart bag to a UQ.

For $500 you can get the UQ and TQ that you really want.

For a UQ, you might check out Paul's sale of his synthetic Jarbridge for $80 at Arrowhead Equipment. Seems like a good deal.

I would be looking for an inexpensive TQ/UQ rather than a cheap one, if I was you.

There are some inexpensive options offered by some of the vendors on this forum, but I don't know that I have come across anything by them that I would consider cheap.

Inexpensive = good quality at a great price.

Cheap = poor quality at a low price + will cost you more in the long run because you will have to replace it sooner.

    Just my $.02 worth...

    REV:
do a search for the PLUQ or Poncho Liner Under Quilt. You can generally get one for about $17-30 at Sportsman Guide or other Army-Navy supply stores. I am planning on making one here in the near future as a backup.

    REV,

My fiance was on a tight budget for setting up her Blackbird. She had a sleeping bag, but no underquilt, and she was freezing her backside off on anything below 60F.

What we did was hit up Craigs list and kept searching for "down sleeping bag". We stumbled into a nearly new Mountain Hardware 650FP down sleeping bag for $50. This was a $250 bag new!

String it up under the hammock and you have a great, warm, 30F UQ. That along with a good sleeping bag or similiar top quilt and your all set!

I second the Jarbridge. Great UQ for the money. And it's only $80 right now, down from $140.
