+1 on the PLUQ. I made a sewn-up PLUQ one last year and love it. Its a bit bulky and probably a little heavy by some folks standards but it works quite well for me. Think I have about $35 in materials (only because I wanted a black PL instead of OD or camo) and it took maybe 3 hours to make. Kept me nice and toasty warm down into the low 40s last winter and probably could have gone lower and still been comfortable.

I will give my nod to the PLUQ as well. Prior to buying my HG quilts I used a PLUQ and a pad in my Blackbird. I was plenty warm. It was really easy to make too. I melted a hole in each corner of the trim so I could thread some shock cord through for suspension. A couple el-cheapo carabiners to hang it and I was golden. I also put some cord through the short ends to cinch them up. For a TQ I used a 30 degree sleeping bag I already had. It worked really well, in fact that bag was too warm most nights I used it.

    What's you expected low temp?

The PLUQ is good to 45 degrees (depending on you) and can be augmented easily. I have a piece of PE foam that I can PIF to you if you need it... It can be put in the PLUQ easily with safety pins... With that setup, I can get down to about 40 degrees, and I'm a cold sleeper...

Total cost to make a no-sew PLUQ: $20 (poncho liner), $10 misc shock cords, cordlocks, clips... oh, and a hot paperclip...

String it up under the hammock and you have a great, warm, 30F UQ. That along with a good sleeping bag or similiar top quilt and your all set!
What great advise! Out of curiousity I searched in down sleeping bag under Maine.

Found a Big Agnes air pad AND a EMS Mountain Light Sleeping bag for 50 bucks!

Isn't the bag alone in the 300 range? If only I had 50 bucks I would gobble that right up!

Golite has the 40 deg synthetic quilt on sale, I have one, and even though its rating is optimistic, it would be good quilt for the SE US.
