Long term report now, the Redneck Ghost is still kicking. No issues with the tieouts that I made with tape and d rings, its been in some awful heavy storms. Still waterproof, no misting at all.

Check post #29 in this thread, and it shows the tieout detail.

Is the Tyvek as noisy as some claim or does the washer/dryer really silent it?

The washer does quiet it. It now has a pretty soft hand to it, a little louder than my Noah tarp, but not noticeable.

I'm still wondering if this DIY thing is worth the savings for those that get no kick out of the DIY title on my gear. It seems like the time and effort and supplies run close to the cost of a really nice tarp already made.

In most cases, DIY isn't worth it on an economics basis alone. Each individual will find it either fun or frustrating.

I tie my own flies for fly fishing. The skill set needed and the type of pain or pleasure derived from tying or from fly fishing are completely different from each other. The same is true of using gear vs making gear.

Where you can save some cash is in the low end of gear; for example, repurposing an old sleeping bag into an under quilt. At the high end, using the latest, lightest, gossamer thin fabrics and puffiest down, etc., there's practically no savings. And, if you mess up one of these expensive fabrics, it's a costly mistake.

Do I make my own gear? Yes. Solely because I like doing it.

There can be a cost savings if you are 'repurposing' materials/gear that you may already own ( or have access to ). Tyvek is a great example as many people have access to it as it is commonly thrown away at construction sites, so the cost may be essentially free.

I bet you could make a workable 9X9 diamond tyvek tarp in 15 minutes if you simply tied four loops of paracord on the corners with a sheetbend.

If you are like me and trying to equip not only yourself. but a family member as well saving a few bucks versus a trade-off in time is worth it to me.

I'm thinking even if I spent $150 on a 9'x150' roll of Tyvek I'd get my money's worth out of it.
