The reason for the ring is that it gives a better diameter for the amsteel and does not jam in the loop part as will happen with tieing the knot you use.

FWIW the problem with knots and amsteel is the diameter of the loops get very small as the hollow braid collapses flat. That significantly degrades the strength of the rope. Using a hard ring maintains the diameter of the cord through the knot. Better would be to use a solid braid and ring as it would collapse even less.
    YMMV

I tried this system when it was first published- worked OK but I was never able to get that darn knot out of the Hennessy suspension line again. You've been warned.

I think I was a bit of a moron. I thought this was how to use a trucker's hitch and this is the best video I'd seen doing it - I probably should have read the original post but.....

I feel like the trucker hitch is all about turning your suspension into a pulley to pull things tighter. Is that really necessary in hammock suspensions? I feel like cinch buckles or marlin spike work just fine for me. Would hate to overtighten with a TH.

Interesting, always looking for 'less' parts, not really concerned on weight, as I usually hang based out of my canoe. Will give it a try this spring. What was the rating of your decender rings? I guess this would would if you used high quality carabiners.
    Thanks

I saw this neat way of tying the trucker's hitch inline and with tension locking. And everything spills easily when removing it.
