Distance between trees, tree straps lengths?

I tried to hang my hammock in the back yard today using my one pecan tree, a very large pecan tree and the neighbors sucker tree across the fence. Well I found out that there is 8 feet on either side of the hammock and not taking a chance I didn't try to lay in it. The tree straps, only one inch width ones were having a problem with the abrasive pecan tree bark, I noticed wear today. Also the hammock seemed to hang very low. In a normal situation should I have tried to put the straps up past my head height, or would I just move on and look for better trees. Also, for someone hitting 235 pounds should I go with the 1 1/2 straps. Thanks for any suggestions, btw, that 235 is down from 345 last year so I'm slowly working on it.

1 inch straps are the most common size around here. Are they polyester?
12 to 15 feet is a good distance between trees.

To get the proper suspension line angle, proper sag & hammock height you would need to place the tree huggers pretty high up the trees. 1" polyester web should hold you up fine. Nylon stretches. Maybe a few wraps around the tree will reduce bark damage.

When the choice exists personal preference for least amount of distance between trees.

    straps and distance

After reading up on the forums I'm looking at making a hammock stand for the front yard and replacing the straps. These were made from material from one of the websites on here but I'm sure the pecan tree and the brick fireplace last time really rubbed this one strap really bad. On average it seems that 8 feet is the max for the straps that people use. I still might go with the 1 1/2 inch for strength at least till I drop some more pounds.

So the basics are you want trees between 12 and 15 feet apart. And wrap your tree straps at or just above head high for that distance. The further apart the trees the higher you need to hang the straps to achieve proper hang angle. If you can't reach high enough, it's usually best to just find a different pair of trees.

    time for hammock stand project

Looks like I will need a hammock stand for the yard then. Dang wanted to use the small pear tree in the front yard but hooking up to the front porch would be inconvenient for others visiting. Thanks for the responses.

Jima, you can put a removable post in the yard.

    Something along these lines.
