    No-Seeum vs Mosquito netting

Out of curiosity, have any of you DIY'ers sewn hammocks using mosquito net instead of no-seeum? And then treated the mozzy net with permethrin?

Recently during a humid, airless night I was pondering whether or not air flow would be improved by getting away from no-seeum. Of course, in the back of my head was an experience I had on a Quebec canoe trip where two of my mates were in a Frostline kit tent with mozzy netting and were eaten alive by no-seeums (before the days of permethrin).

I do not have any DIY plans - Just wanted to bring up the subject for discussion.

No-See-Um net have an airflow of about 65%, normal net is about 80-85%
Not using chemicals is always better, you never know how long it lasts.

Something I read recently said that testing showed permethrin doesn't adhere very well to any type of netting. Something about it not being able to soak into the fibers. I don't remember where I saw it though, sorry.

Normally the functionality of an impregnated item lasts for about a year, depending on how wet it gets (washing, rain, falling in a stream...)

Never had an issue with the no see um netting not being impregnated/treated from my Hennessy in midge or mozzie countries (Sweden, SE Asia, Australia and Latin America).

I do know that I had a shirt that had been treated originally did loose it's function... the buggers in Arnhemland Australia went straight through the two layers...

They make all kinds of treated mosquito netting,,just do a search on the internet and you will find it, Also,,the netting ranges from 125 holes per sq. inch up to about 650 holes per sq. inch for your differences in air flow. The finer the holes, the less air your going to get however.

I don't like No-see-um because its just to hot with no airflow... I made one that has 200 holes per sq. in. Has great air flow, can feel the slightest breeze.
I also made one for OldGringo. I know he soaked his in permethrin. He would be the one to asked...

I've been happy with the result, but we barely have any skeeters this year, much less noseeums.

At the Big Thicket, others reported hearing skeeters all night, I heard nothing...the permethrin appeared to set up a no-fly zone around the net.
