Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.
Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......
I was thinking smaller than Slow Hike's rendition-- not so much below and extending more on a ridge line above.
A Packa style hood/pack cover would be a consideration, with the "front" of the garment pointing down in hammock cover mode and a little Velcro, the hood mating with the suspension line. I have to learn how to drive a sewing machine!
Now that's an heck of an idea. I'm a big fan of ponchos (when it gets windy, I always have a spare microbiner and some line on me to make a belt/tail to cover my pack) since it's so hot most of the year down here in FL. I wonder if I could add some Velcro or omni-tape to my GI issue poncho to make an end cover and get away with a smaller tarp, since I'm going to be packing it anyway.
A sewing machine isn't that hard to use...
...at least, as long as you're willing to curse at it, seam rip, and start over when you screw up...
Curse you, HF, for giving me so many ideas that strain my wallet! :shakefist:
I use my dri-ducks poncho snapped on over the end of my ridgeline, but under my tarp, kindof works like a 1/2 sock if you pull it over until it's taut. It provides some weather and wind protection...
Grizz used his over the tarp, which worked so well it inspired him to create his Grizz Beaks...

Dale,
Maybe you should extend it below the hammock. I won a Jacks-r-Better/Just Jeff's pack cover and gear hammock in a raffle a couple of years ago, and it's one of the things I value most - not as a pack cover, because my pack bags are waterproof, but the convenience of the gear hammock as a place to put clothes at night is outstanding.
Ok. I see it better now that WV has pitched in. The storage is also important...

My thoughts are that my rain coat/poncho hangs frommy suspension covering one end of the hammock and my pack with pack cover hangs formt eh suspension on the other end providing me with reachable storage and rain coverage.
Of course I can just close the corners in on my tarp too.
