You may be able to find the deminsions of his stands in his book, check out a copy at the local library (if they have it). If not I know Books A Million will be able to get you a copy.

I did not mean to offend, I was just looking at the street L and thinking about the load forces that are being applied at this point. As a big fella, If it ain't 1" or better I want be on it!!!!!!!! Enjoy the stand and enjoy the relaxation you get in it............

Meaning I think the 90 degree elbow at the top or the tee at the bottom would be the breaking point. Those two joints take the brunt of any sway in the hammock stand. The L joint isn't getting stressed in as many directions.

Anyway, I'm just guessing. But it doesn't feel at all like I'm going to have to worry about the stand failing. Believe me, if it didn't feel secure, my mom wouldn't go anywhere near it!!!!

Also, I was trying to find other hammock stand designs that use a top bar. I've read references to Ed Speer's hammock stand design, but I haven't seen any pics or instructions. I did try searching the site with the terms, "top bar" but the search engine doesn't like to process short 3-letter words.
    Here's Ed's stand:

I agree with your assessment...those little cast iron fittings make me nervous.

I have built some "top bar" stands, but they are welded.

No offense taken!!! I'm a talker and a thinker and new to communicating in forums! I'll work on my tone, I didn't mean to be all defensive when I was writing... I've got to learn how to use those emoticons & smilies better too.

And we're all tiny women using this hammock stand, the biggest person is 5'4" & 135 Lbs. Now if two of us were to share the hammock stand, I would be a lot more concerned.

Cool, the WayBack Machine or whatever it is didn't want to take me to this when I tried previously. Thanks! I was thinking 1.25 would be a nice size pipe to hang from, and apparently it is!!! But it sure isn't cheap...

All pieces are 1.25" galvanized steel pipe or fittings as priced by my local Menards hardware store

    Cost$
24.49 A) 10' pipe, one for horizontal ridgepole
8.47 B) 18" pipe, one to extend horizontal ridgepole
    43.96 C) 5' pipe, 2 for uprights
    43.68 D) 24" pipe, 4 for foot braces
7.02 E) 90 degree Elbow, 2 to attach uprights to ridgepole
11.18 F) Tee Junction, 2 to attach foot braces to uprights
    7.49 G) 1.25" Union, one to attach 18" & 10' ridgepole pipes

Total cost: $146.29 plus tax, plus wrenches

Ed Speer's total from Lowes in April of 2004 was 108.10 plus tax, plus wrenches

No, not cheap, and not light, either.

I built mine to fit inside a specific canvas wall tent during deer season...hauled it to our campsite, put it together, and that's where it's gonna stay, 'till the end of time.

Here's the thread for my welded stand.

    Wooden top bar design?

Thanks OldGringo, I like your welded stand! It's less expensive than galvanized pipe and you don't have to deal with the headache of using fittings & pipe wrenches. And the 'biner hooks are really slick!!!

I'm thinking about a project like this, but out of wood. I'll start a new thread for that idea, though.
