    Exclamation Sling length over estimated

Thinking of selling or adding to the PIF thread my 10 foot long 7/64th orange Amsteel slings.

I thought I would need the length due to the sometimes vast distances i encounter between attachment points, be it trees, buildings, and especially park pavillions.

I'm thinking of down sizing to 6 foot ones since i noticed even on my longest of hangs i have so much tail leftover to manage.

What sling length have you found most practical?

I've had great success with my 6' whoopie slings and 6' tree straps up here in Wisconsin. Granted I sometimes need to avoid the biggest of the oaks, but I find these lengths to be quite manageable.

Another thought here, sorry for the double post. Instead of selling or PIFing your extra long whoopies, you could just pull the tail through to your desired length and trim the excess. Your excess could then be used for soft shackles, chain links, etc.

good idea! the principle of them being entirely spliced and resplicable just flew right over my head.

Thank you I will do that, just need something make a small fid to re bury the tail....

i made mine about 8', works good for the area i live in and where i do 90% of my hanging, nothing wrong with having them long, no matter what they are only going to adjust down to 15" or so now matter what length they are......so i made mine long enough so i don't have to worry about reaching or have to carry any extenders

I'm using 6 footers myself right now.

That was the same logic i had when i ordered mine at 10 foot...its almost over kill for where i am right now and how little im able to get out due to work.

I bet the moment i cut and re splice them i will have a moment where i need the extra 4 feet

if you have other things that you could use the extra for then i would go ahead and chop it off, if not, then i wouldn't.....it's not like your saving a bunch of weight by doing that, just tie up the extra to keep it out of your way, that way if you do need the length you will have it, just my opinion tho.....if you do chop it tho, make sure not to plan any hanging trips to the pacific northwest

All you need for a fid is some thin wire. I use 28 gauge wire from Home Depot and it works great.

Splicing is really easy once you do it a few times. Give it a try.

Oh, and to answer the question from top of thread. I use 8" tree huggers and 8" whoopies. The trees can get really big in Oregon. The key for me is bringing trekking poles to help push the tree huggers up as high as possible when faced with widely spaced trees. This helps maintain the 30 degree angle with wide spacing.
