Hem size on gathered end hammock...

I've seen pictures, I've read dozens of postings, done a search, waiting on my Ed Speers book to get here but don't want to wait any longer. So making a gathered end hammock with Jeffs website info and guidance, what hare the end hems like, is it a half inch twice? also, being new to hammock making, would it hurt if I did the other end like Knotty did on his video and see which I like best. Figuring doing it Jeffs way I could adjust out the floppy sides or go ahead later and add the channel is I like Knottys way. Most important now is what size for the hem on the end and the side?

You only need a small hem. The hem really doesn't hold anything. It's the bunched up fabric that stops the suspension from slipping off. I sew mine with 1/2" hem doubled over. You could go smaller but don't forget you need to thread the mason cord or similar through that hem.

    hem size

Thanks Mad, I was going with the gathered end on the first try so I can try and adjust the edge to get rid of the floppy edges.....1/2 sound right to me.

My recomendation is to go ahead and put the channels in the end if you think you might want to try Knotty's method. You can still whip the ends like Jeff shows on his website.

I currently use a channel like Knotty shows on the head end of my hammock and whipped with corners pulled like Jeff shows on the foot end. I find this to give me the most comfortable lay as the channel gently hugs my body and the pulled corners on the whipping prevents the floppy sides so that my top insulation doesn't fall out of the hammock at night.

If you are going to do accordion folds or that Hennesy thing I find that a wider hem makes the folding process easier. It does not make gathering easier but it doesn't complicate it all that much either.

    Went with wider hem

I went with a wider hem on each end and left a channel if I decide to try knottys way. First will try the whipped end and see how the sides adjust.
