Do those rings actually hold the weight of a person? I just find it hard to believe, there so light. Also are the slits in them normal?
If there is a slit you can see through, or put your knife blade into, that might not be normal.

There is a "joint" that looks like a tiny groove around the ring. That's normal.
Not like a but jointed steel ring, but a joint around the circle.

    And they hold fine.

That's the one a groove. Good to know that's normal, was not so sure about it, when it turned up in the post a week ago.

What's your recommendation for a descending ring? There were quite a few options... and we don't have a REI here. The one from Whoopiesling.com is out of stock... Your advice would greatly appreciated.

Another option for rings is Paul a "AHE".

Keep in mind what these are used for. They are made to rappel off the rock face. The only thing I would look out for is it's construction, Solid is the one you want. I am not talking about the SMC Descending Ring, I am talking about the one that is rolled, they will fail easily.

The SMC Descending Ring's Break Strength is 14 kilonewtons, (about 3147 pounds-force)

The Omega Pacific Rappel Ring is rated at 20 kilonewtons, (about 4496 pounds-force).

I think you good to go!
