The piece of the rope that contains the bury - that length which is inserted in to another part of the rope - needs to be extended to it's maximum length. If you shorten the whoopie sling, the buried portion tends to bunch up which doesn't offer as much grip as when you lengthen, or milk the rope to it's longest possible length. The rope tends to act like a Chinese finger puzzle. When you pull your fingers apart the puzzle tends to constrict around your fingers - your whoopie slings do the same thing and, as waldo points out, you should do this prior to getting in to your hammock or you might wind up with an unexpected surprise. Hope that helps.

I will try milking it more(that didn't sound right), but I'm pretty sure I have the slings set up correctly and well-milked. I think it's an inevitable function of sag with comparison to the distance I'm spanning. Even heavy duty electrical lines sag quite a bit when they span pole to pole so I think that's the effect I'm getting here. I will just try to tie higher. I am about 6'2" and a reach of around 8' and I thought that was high enough but when I'm all saddled in, my butt is inches off the ground, so definitely need to try something else.

What about structural ridgelines? Do those help at all here?

    What straps are you using?

My Dyneema whoopies make my hammock feel like sitting on a park bench at 30ft spans,

If you have ENO slap straps, you have found the problem
