The piece of the rope that contains the bury - that length which is inserted in to another part of the rope - needs to be extended to it's maximum length. If you shorten the whoopie sling, the buried portion tends to bunch up which doesn't offer as much grip as when you lengthen, or milk the rope to it's longest possible length. The rope tends to act like a Chinese finger puzzle. When you pull your fingers apart the puzzle tends to constrict around your fingers - your whoopie slings do the same thing and, as waldo points out, you should do this prior to getting in to your hammock or you might wind up with an unexpected surprise.
