    first time hang

i just got back from a trip south to the s.f. area. on the way down i tryed my set up for the first time. i found a good spot to "stealth" camp outside of yereka calif., at the 4000 foot level. had to drive up a jeep trail a few hundered feet to get away from the road, set up was in the rain..the 12 foot square kelly tarp went up first . and then the hammock and quilts/sleeping bag. untill that point i was having misgivings about the tarp size- after getting under it i dismissed any ideas of up grading to a smaller, more hammock designed tarp (for back paciking i will probably still, buy a purpose built design tarp) the set up was probably not well done, but served the purpose. i did have to readjust the suspention in the middle of the night, since i had slumped to with in 4inches of the forest floor. this was the first time i camped outdoors in over 25years, so i was not all that well rested in the am. i'm sure that once i get accumated to it, it will get much better. confort level once inside was superb!

That's still off the ground, so it counts.

Congrats on a successful first hang!

It only gets better from there. I too am not a fan of some of the minimalist tarps out there. I prefer some room ouside the hammock. However, there are plenty of tarps available with tons of space if you're interested.

good thought, wakoz but i'm a fan of cheapness. the kelly is it for all my car camping.(at least untill i out grow it or it starts to leak). i might add that my sleep that night was effected by my lack of outdoor experience and not the hannock's confort. there was a distant aircraft landing pattern. each time one would get on final the sound at my camp sounded like a low animal "gurrrrr". thinking the worse i had to look around to see from what direction the bear was comming from- this lasted for some time, untill i "maned up" and allowed myself to go to sleep. youre right aztech, i was useing the Achomawi indian spelling for the area. i'll try to use the Michelin spelling from now on to avoid any confusion
