    Gear test DIY fleece UQ

After reading the thread on When Not to use a UQ and the one on making a UQ out of fleece I decided to DIY one up.
    DIY Fleece UQ.jpg

Friday seemed like a great night to test it out. The temps were down in the lower 60s. I have to say that while I was not cold, I wasn't toasty warm either. There was no wind that night and I think if there had been a breeze I would have been chilly.

So my conclusion is that this UQ is great for summer nights where you just need a little something. I'll be looking for ways to beef up the loft on the next UQ project for sure.

Nice work and thanks for the field test. That appears to have a nylon outer shell... yes? And even with that it wasn't toasty? Hmmm?
    Good luck,

Perhaps adding a layer of IX between the fleece and Nylon would result in an improved thermal retention. Of course it would likely be bulkier than a down UQ for the same temp ratings. But also a good bit cheaper.

Indeed. I would be suspicious of the seal/fit...a bit of tweaking might yield improvement.

was there any shock cord involved in your quilt suspension? that would help it to stay in place against any movement from inside the hammock..

Correct I made it out of 1.1 with draw string channels on the ends.

I did do a midnight adjustment but it wasn't noticeably better

Yep I have shock cord at each end. The UQ is right up against the hammock when I am not in it.

Funny, I was very close to Bacon Ridge Natural Area

I think it boils down to fleece just not being a good enough insulator. I have slept with a pad before and I can feel the toasty goodness all over. Not so with the fleece.

If you want to go the fleece route, you might want to consider wind blocker fleece. It should insulate better.
