Pretty good effort to hike 50km under those circumstances. Crocs are a pretty good fallback, sounds like you might have been better carrying them than your other shoes!
I'm sure you did your homework, and its real hard when things don't go to plan. I've been there and done that, and I have to say that even with the best prep, things don't always go to plan. I've had Scarpa boots I could walk 40km a day in that I wore out - replacement pair of the same model give me pain after 20km. I find the only answer is to walk my feet off in training so that I just know that the footwear I have (and my feet) will stand up on the hike. If they don't then I replace and repeat the wear-in and training until I'm happy. I'm lucky that local tracks have the full mix of steep, rugged, flat and hard so this can all be done from my front gate.
