    Selling stuff to the UK

I see a lot of great gear being sold through HF, but I'm never sure if you guys would be happy to sell to the UK. I see some shipping prices marked as CONUS, but does that mean that the vendor will not ship outside of the US or just that a higher shipping rate would need to be agreed?

Whats your general opinion, would you be happy to ship to the UK? (assuming funds had cleared via Paypal)

    Thanks

    Mark

I bought a hammock from Warbonnet and a underquilt from Arrowhead. No problems with shipping to Europe from them.

Take contact with the vendor directly through their website and you will probably get a fast answer!

Thanks Beiggolmai, it was more the private sales I was thinking of really. I have bought a few things from retailer in the US without problem, but I'm now looking for a WBBB and tarp set-up which would attract a chunk of import duty if I bought new. I realise I'll probably still have to pay some on second hand gear, but was hoping to offset some of the cost.

    Thanks

For most of the vendors here, we ship globally. Extra shipping fees apply typically.
Contact any of the vendors for details.

Items in the PIF thread may be negotiated with the seller as well. Sometimes the seller will deal with the extra paperwork. Again, extra cost of shipping will need to haggled with the seller.

I personally wouldn't mind shipping to the UK, but the shipping costs a lot more. Most of the time people sell stuff including the cost of shipping within the continental US (CONUS) to entice people to buy... no extra charge for shipping. I guess it just depends on who it is. I would think you could say "hey, I'll pay for the shipping above what it would normally be, here's my address so you can get a quote" or something like that.

That being said, you wanna buy a sleeping bag, thermarest, or backpack? I got some stuff for sale

I had a few turning me down, because they were worried about international shipping(it's dead easy though).
But as long as you are willing to pay the extra shipping expenses, it's usually no problems.
Also if you are getting used goods, make sure it's labeled on the Toll declaration - that way they won't slam you with vat etc. estimated on the retail price.

Nearly all my hang gear come from overseas vendors, primarily from american vendors.... No problems so far

Just two comments: one on how easy it can be, and one to why some people don't/won't.

As you know, there have been a lot of internet scams supposedly originating from either Africa (Nigeria usually) or Eastern Europe (usually Ukraine or Russia). Some people have been burned by international buyers and won't do it again, some have heard stories of people being burned and won't.

Not backpacking related, but a few years ago I sold a lens to a guy in Milan. I drove down to my local US Post Office, filled out a customs declaration, put it in a flat rate box, and it was ~$50 shipping. That was only 10% of the selling price, so not so bad. But, as all us americans know, that's a USPS flat rate box and anything that fits into that box will be ~$50 to Europe, as long as it's under 20lbs - Domestic not only is cheaper, but 70lbs in that little box too.
My Italian selling experience was painless, but it took about 2 weeks to go all the way from California to Italy.

I'm buying more and more from the states due to the lower prices and better availabilty.

No problems yet-far from it, everyone so far has been an absolute pleasure to deal with.

I've not bought anything privately though yet.

Just for volume, there's more experience you can research on ebay.

Post 9/11 there have been some security-related hassles and aggravations. We Central North Americans can't believe what a pain it can (not must...can) be shipping to North North America. That's a souring experience.

Lastly, there's inexperience and fumbling in firmly placing and assuming liability for loss. So, when a prospective buyer asks me as a seller to research costs for her......... and then I've forgotten to mention or don't know the amount of duties for an 11lb medical reference book I'm asked to ship to Thailand......

My impression is that Brits and other Europeans are better set up for and better at international transactions.
