I love the diy forum, respect all the dedicated diy'ers, and am grateful for all the contributers who have made it possible for me to hang.

This said, I am the worst diy'er in the world: I'm in it for the end product, and rush just about every job so I can get out there and play--craftsmanship, sense of accomplishment for a job well done, stitches that are even moderately straight... that all takes a back seat to me being done and playing. The results look like something you'd drag out of Sanford and Son's, but it works, and I am proud (in a perverse sort of way) of the hideous projects that keep me up in the air.

For all of you who have mastered meticulousness, are proud possessors of patience, and have cultivated careful craftsmanship--I envy you, and one day hope to become you. I love watching what you do, and even though my efforts are a mockery of the great work I see here, I'm proud to be a part of the diy hammock community (even if it's on the less fashionable side of town where good diy'ers don't feel comfortable going after dark ).

Again, thanks for the inspiration and knowledge.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

I first found this forum after another mountain biker told me about running into a bunch a hangers all over Nebo Ridge trail in HNF (the first Annual Hoosier Hang I think).

I came back to it after starting to hike again this winter and got hooked.

As a life long DIY'er, it will be the DIY section that keeps me here.

Thanks to all for the help.

I have been a DIY person for a long time, and it goes for just about anything, I love making or rebuilding things just for the sake of doing it. Buying something may sometimes be less expensive, but it's just more fun to make it yourself.

I have done a lot in the kitchen dept. titanium bush stoves, small compact units,(my latest minimalist cooking set, for the one who might wish to go cookless much of the time but likes the possibility of the boiling water meals, and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate now and then . 12 oz alum. pop pot, cozy for pot,[keep coffee hot], hdwre cloth pot stand, esbit stove. [small bit O' titanium foil], small bic., spoon, table cloth, [12 X 12 cuben], foil wind screen, insulated lid for pot,= 2.5 OZ.Total for kit.. 1/2 esbit (1/4 oz) will usually boil 12 oz h20, ) done a lot O cuben stuff, hammocks, bags, pacs, etc. gnome

I came for the hammock camping related knowledge and advise and stumbled blindly into diy as a result. For me there is a great sense of pride knowing I am using gear I made to my own specs, etc... In addition, I find between work and family time it is hard to get out on the trail as much as I want but by working on my diy gear I prolong the trips I do take by making gear and planning for the next trip.

I also enjoy making gear for friends and family and appreciate all the helpful hints and advise around here that has allowed me to dive right in. Before HF I had never used a sewing machine...

I started w/ Revs tutorials, sewed a few stuff sacks, then a Jerry Chair, then a hammock, then a tarp and then IX TQ / UQ. Have not yet attempted a down project or a pack but plan to at some point...

As a retiree I have lots of time and little money. Diy was the only way for me to be where I am now in hammocking. In less than a year I have gone from knowing nothing about hammocking to sleeping every night in a diy hammock and indoor stand. Almost my entire kit is diy all thanks to the Hammock Forum and my fellow hangers. Future diy will include new lighter hiking hammock and tarpand 2 indoor hammocks for grandaughters. That should keep me busy thru the heat of summer. Thank You HF.

I make as much of my gear as I can:
I look forward to your poll..... for me i can say that I would have saved so much money if I had bought some of the items, but there is much pride that goes along with making your own gear. You can make it to FIT you and your needs and sometimes make the item lighter than what the market has available.

    So far I have made:

    three hammocks
several rain flys (trying to find the right shape/size that I want/need)
    bug net
    tie-outs
    whoopi slings
    bud-light bottle stove
other cooking gear like pot stand and wind shield
    UQ
    hand warmers

I have not made a pack yet but I have an Osprey Exos 58 Pack coming to me for my birthday next week.

so I may not make a pack since this one weighs in at 2 lbs. 8 oz.
What else do you want to know?
