That is not an issue with amsteel. Nylon is known for not accepting heavy vibration and pulsating activities. The Coast Guard went to nylon towing ropes for a while when they became available and rather quickly abandoned them after the ropes exploded. If I remember correctly several crewmen were killed as a result of nylon rope failure. Amsteel is a whole different critter.

    1/8th inch??? Don't you all mean 1/4th? 8/64ths rather than 4/64ths?

    1/8 = 8/64...

7/64 is 8 strand rated at 1600# and 1/8 is 12 strand rated at 2500#

Ummm...not sure what you're thinking here (unless something is going whoosh over my head).

8/64" = 1/8" and starts off with 900 lbs additional breaking strength over 7/64" Amsteel Blue.

I am 300 lbs and use 7/64". I bought this just because that's what I saw others using and it was rated to hold me just fine. I have had maybe 10-15 nights in the hammock with this setup and have had no issues. However, I can't say I would not go with the 1/8" if I did it again, it would not add that much weight to my pack.

Has the OP thought of going with a webbing setup?

Less fiddle factor than whoopies (no worries of whoopie slipping off the toggle, no knots to learn, etc.).

If your relatives are just recreationally using a hammock, this may be the better way to go.

    Just another option.

Yeah I know. I'm torn between the geek factor of the whoopies and the practicality of webbing...

I think there are some typos in this. The second sample scenario on the left confused me for a minute. Still really interesting info, though.

Cost of rope is proportional to mass which is proportional to load rating. So, the 1/8" Amsteel will cost you 50% more than the 7/64".

Well, it handles nicer, too, guessing your big bro and nephew don't have hands with slender fingers, either.

But, what is going to break first? How about some stitching? Or maybe you can be sure the line shears the fabric of the hammock under the dynamic load you are afraid of?

I'd think about the kind of mis-use that might occur and what you want to happen as a result. If it is two guys and five hundred lb falling on a hammock which was 18 inches off the ground, would your rather have the Amsteel survive and tear one of the necks off the hammock? Isn't it likely that under that load, if the hammock doesn't fail somewhere, that the nylon stretchs 30% and they hit the ground anyway, no worse damage to them than if they were horsing around, fell, and............hit the ground?
