I just picked up a Singer 201 sewing machine

I hope someone can tell me if its a good one to learn to sew with. Got it at goodwill for 30 bucks. As far as I can see it just needs a bobbin and needle.

Hooked it up in the store and it ran with no clattering - seems very smooth to my uneducated eye and has very little wear.

It looks exactly like this one for sale on ecrater for $300.

I would be grateful for any advice. It has more dust on it than anything else.
So - good deal? I've got a week to take it back.

    Thanks!

They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To

    That's my machine...it's a bomber. Don't return it.

Owner's manuals are available online for download.

    Good score!

What a great find, Lost_Biker! Get a manual and learn where to put oil. You will be a thread injecting maniac soon!

Great machine! Clean it, lube it lightly with Singer lubricants, and it will probably work for the rest of your life.

That's a fine rig you have there. Like the others said, download a manual for it, clean & lube it, give it some TLC and it will be a great friend.

Never, never, never use 3 in 1 oil on a sewing machine. It is mixed with ingredients that will dry out the lube, cause lint to stick, cake on thick with wear. Don't do it. I don't know if it has to be Singer lubes but they wouldn't harm. I use a good lightweight machine oil that I get from sewing centers. Mostly no brand stuff but good stuff to use.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Excellent find! Can't add anything more than the others have said. I made my first gear (fleece jackets for me and the wife the year we got married) on my 201 fifteen years ago. Still going strong.

Thank you all! I was hoping I got a good one. It came with a button hole attachment thingy that I found inside the case. Seems to be in good shape, but I'm taking it to "Moms" as she knows more about sewing than I do. She'll teach me how to use it. I know it only does straight stitches, but thats what I wanted anyway for making my own gear.
Says she has a bobbin and needles ready! Under-quilt time!
I've always "just" missed great deals at goodwill - I took a chance on this one without calling anyone. Glad I finally made a good choice.

Ramblinrev - thanks for the advice. There's a sewing machine shop where I'm going this weekend, so I'll make sure to get some oil. Already downloaded a manual and will carefully inspect, clean and oil in the right places. Thanks again!

Never thought I would get excited about an old sewing machine - but I am!

it is a power tool, after all; has a cord and motor, you make things with it, and if you are not careful you can do yourself some damage..
what's not to get excited about? (More Power, Scotty! )
