Am hiking it this summer was wondering if hammocks would work. The pictures I have seen look like trees are few and far between at the backcountry campsites. Has anyone hiked this trail and should I just bring a tent ?

If you mean the one between Crescent Meadow and Mt Whitney? I'd take a hammock, some long straps (6-10 feet), and use pads instead of an underquilt - that combo will serve you well. You'll be able to hammock probably half the time, tarp on the ground the rest of the way.
When I went from Onion Valley to Crabtree Meadow and south, I kicked myself the whole way for thinking I couldn't hammock - could have hung every night even above 10,000 feet. The foxtail pines are everywhere on some stretches of the trail.
+1 to Lori's comments.
There are a lot of trees until you get a little into the "Whitney zone" at Crabtree, but with some long straps and a creative mind you can pull it off.
