Hrm...Ginnie Springs might be okay with that. As far as I know, though, there isn't any hiking near to the springs up that way. And there're a lot of drunk meatheads out there on the weekends.

Maybe Blue Springs (right down the road from Ginnie) might be a better idea; they're generally quieter. They don't have a river run, though, just the springs proper.

Neither of those have hiking, though; they're definitely car camping sites.

For hiking and water combined, there's Ichetucknee Springs; the campground there isn't actually in the state park, it's a privately-owned one across the street. Means that you aren't actually camping on the water, but it's awfully pretty up that way. The hiking is strictly short loops, though. If memory serves, the longest one is something like two miles.

Anyway, outside of Ocala National Forest, I can't think of anywhere where there's good hiking, springs, and the ability to hang off of the top of my head. Seems like the triple crown is always hard to get a hold of, eh?

There is Hidden Pond in Ocala. The camping site sits between two bodies of water, Hidden Pond & Crooked Sapling Pond. Both are spring fed. It's fairly remote, you have to hike 3 miles from the nearest parking trailhead(Pat's Island). Its located right on the Florida Trail.

Looking at a map of the area, it seems that Hidden Pond is about four miles from Juniper, as well. Is that about right?

I think it's a little further. I want to say it's about 6. If memory serves correctly it's 6 from Juniper to Hidden Pond and about 4 from Hidden to Hopkins.

Just checked the trail guide (07-08) and it shows 5.3 and 5.2 respectively.

    Ocklawaha River

Last Aug. My oldest son and I did a trip down the Ocklawaha River . I was surprised at how tolerable the heat was for that time of year. Being close to the cool river really seems to make a difference. Also surprisingly the bugs were not that bad, (possibly because of the moving water?) The biggest and really only issue I had with this trip was the lack of available campsites within our range. We ended up camping on a swampy finger on a bend in the river that was just dry enough to camp on but difficult to get into due to the thickness of the jungle like environment there. Got to tell ya, my Clark really earned it's money on that trip. I slept all night without moving an inch and no bug bites other than the spider bites I got while in my kayak. This is a rather crude video of some of what we saw. and heard. Trust me when I say the vid and audio do it no justice at all. The night sounds in this place are absolutely AMAZING!

All are a little south and west of you but check out the Southwest Florida Water Management District recreation site. Some interesting areas there.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Has anyone thought of hanging in the green swamp area?
