    the weight of gear

being a backpacker the weight of gear is usually an issue for most people and i am no different. while i consider myself to be somewhat of a lite weight backpacker truly i have no idea as to what my kit actually weights.

so here is my question to everyone: what type of scale do you use for weighing your gear?
assuming some type of food / postal scale
    digital or spring loaded dial
    capacity lbs / oz
    accuracy? +/- 1oz? +/- .5oz?
    price?

so what do you use and recommend?

Yep, I use a food scale. I weigh everything out and add it to a spread sheet on my computer. My base weight is based without water and food. I think the scale cost me about $10 bucks and the spread sheet I found on the internet.

    I use a postal scale http://www.google.com/products/catal...ed=0CHgQ8wIwBA
It works for what I need, I got it muuuuuuch cheaper than this I think around 15-16$, but I have had it for a while now so they might have raised the price since then, but you get the idea!?!?
I would say if you get a digital make sure to get something that goes to at least 10lbs, reason for this is I weigh my food bag, and I could be wrong but I think they only make 5lb and 10lb digital scales!

Mine is accurate to the gram, so .1 oz I think. Also, check out GearGrams.com. Great website to keep track of everything.

Yep, got mine at Wally World for about ten bucks and it measures, ozs, lbs and grams/kg. Works great for me and I also put everything in a spreadsheet. One tip is to get a big rubbermade container for measuring flowing things like TQ's and clothes and such. Put the bin on the scale and hit the tare button (on mine you just hit "on" again) and it will reset the scale to zero. You can then put whatever inside the tub and get an accurate measurement. Everyone probably knew that, but you never can tell

I use a food scale I picked up several years ago, not even sure where I got it from. It only cost about $10 - $20 and is accurate with +/-1g. Has a Tare function so I can place bulky items in a container to control them as I weigh everything.

I post all the weights in a spreadsheet in excel I made. Spreadsheets are good, because with excel if you program it properly it will tell me what gear to take depending upon season or how much weight I want to carry. Of course I'm a bit OCD about weights of items, so much that I weigh any firestarting materials (i.e. Dryer lint, cotton pads, char cloth, birchbark, etc.) that I will carry with me. And I don't even think of myself as a gram weiny.

For things like my hammock, tarp, quilts, etc. I write the weight on my stuff sacks so I know what I'm putting in my pack. +1 on geargrams.com
