    Staking out hammock sides

I have been camping in a hammock since October in my Skeeter Beeter Pro, so I still consider myself a novice and am learning more each time I use it. This weekend, I was out with the scouts. Where we camped was a large area under the canopy of live oaks. But it was was only my second really warm weather experience in the hammock. Last month, I was warm and felt confined in the hammock. But this time I did things a little differently.

For the first time, I kept both sides of my tarp high for better air flow, but more importantly I attached lines to the side pull outs and staked out the sides of the hammock. This really opened it up: the bug net hung better, and it was much more comfortable, and it felt less confining. In fact, I was surprised at just how much more comfortable it was.

Night time temps stayed around 80°, and I didn't even use my fleece liner at all (I never sleep with nothing on me--I don't mean naked, I mean without a sheet or light blanket). I did have my 3 oz Jarbridge River under me, mainly to keep the bugs off the bottom, but it did not make me too hot.

This great hammocking thing just got better!

Next month we are off to the mountains (GSMNP) for 2 nights then off to NE Tennessee for a week of camp. Temps will be at least a little cooler there than here. Can't wait!

I almost always stake the sides (especially at the head). Whether or not I do it at my feet depends on how I feel. It certainly opens things up, though. Glad you're enjoying it!

Definitely, staking out the sides is a plus! It sounds like that trip to the Smokies is a good idea. You are a trooper for even attempting to hang this time of year in Florida!

Do you guys still stake the sides when you use a UQ? Do you find it doesn't allow the UQ to snug up against the hammock body?

I did not take pics of this one, as we were just too busy with the scouts. But I did use my underquilt. It is an Arrowhead Equipment Jarbridge River, which is a 7/8 length quilt (shorter than a full length, but longer than a 3/4). It appeared to stay snugged up to the hammock fine. The mosquitos were out in force, and my only protection on my backside was the UQ, so I can assure you that it was in place.

My first night was claustrophobic with the tarp pulled down. I've since upgraded to a bigger tarp, staked out for a more open feel, works great, eh?
