Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.
Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......
Just a little different perspective to offer, I have a claytor diamond and I love it. Ease of set up, ridge line, two tie outs, done. I know it is limited coverage, but I have been through some wicked weather in it and it has never failed me.
Most of the time the weather is good and a diamond can be configured in a lot of ways. In good times, I like to put one side up high creating a diamond lean to of sorts and I really feel like I am sleeping outside because I can see everything.
I often feel cooped up in a large rectangular tarp. A major positive for me sleeping in a hammock is that I can see, watch the sky, the sun, the trees in the wind, the river run by. To do all that and be horizontal, bug free, and comfy is hard to beat. It seems easier to me in a diamond.
Now heavy duty winter camping, I think a rectangular is called for. Resign yourself to having multiple tarps. I think tarps are as much fun if not more fun than a hammock to configure in different ways as part of your kit. I now have 5 different tarps and want to add more. I still, especially in the summer, gravitate back to my diamonds.
“Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
I have enjoyed the rectangular, particularly in thunderstorms!
I think what Knotty said is the most significant in the context of ease of use for a beginner.
The tarp with more coverage is going to be more forgiving of mistakes in site selection and setup.
