Nice illustration, Knotty! I made both an asymetrical diamond and a hex tarp, both designed from minimal coverage and completely disliked the diamond but totally loved the hex.

this helped a lot...I finally get the idea behind a hex tarp! it was such a light bulb moment. Don't know why I needed the visual because now it seems so straight forward.

great diagram. I use both a asym and hex fly with my HH but more often than not I do pack the Hex. It gives me more options in the long run.

How does the Kelty Noah's 12 fit in? In my experience it seems larger on the sides than your drawing implies. I have never had coverage issues. as a matter of fact I have been the gear storage tarp on more than one occasion. What is really nice about the Kelty is that there are many different guy out points to configure the tarp with the wind and weather. You can make a fairly bomb proof shelter if you know how to stake/tie things out.

Of course real world experience is better than drawings but hopefully the comparison is still useful.

    Hi Knotty,
Which tarp manufacturer did you use to determine the HEX angles since they all seem to vary (OES hex has an extreme cat cut vs TtoT cat cut not so extreme)
or how did you come up with the angle in your graphic?
    Is there a standard formula?
