I am a volunteer Fire Fighter, a Boy Scout Leader, and general ropes and knot lover! Between the three, I have learned a lot of knots, realized that out of the 100 or so I have learned, I really only NEED 5 or so. There are a couple of decorative knots, (Monkey fist, Bugle, wood badge knot, etc.) that I know for fun and they have limited other uses. I watch youtube videos on knots, other people show me knots when I see something knew.

Knots are fun and they can help you maintain finger dexterity.

Haven't double knotted since (and it looks super impressive (I always try to draw attention to myself when I tie my shoes now--my kids just roll their eyes (philistines)).

The book that helped me with knots is "The Alternative knot book" by Dr. Harry Asher, but now there is the net.

A number of different places, but my dad taught me a lot of them, after that I have exceeded his knowledge in the decorative knot area self taught mostly. Look @ TIAT videos on you tube. I also learned to do the harness in JROTC in High school.

Boy Scouts, mostly. I was our troops 50th Eagle Scout in our 50th year (1998). I also learned a few fishing knots from my grandfather.

I've been a scout leader for several years now and had a fellow leader that was a knot head and was always showing me a new knot. I became addicted to all of the decorative knots and wanted to learn as many as possible. I purchased the ABOK and started teaching myself new knots. My son got into knots as well and was soon teaching the other boys in the troop the required knots. I found a program called Knot Master and implemented it in the troop. When I got into hammocks tying the HH knot was easy. I normally end up helping our scouts and other leaders tie their HH knot when setting up their hammock. One day maybe they will learn.
