I suppose it's time for me to start doing some real legwork.
    Absolutely reasonable.

My total setup, which again, was built for comfort and not weight savings, weighs a total of 5 lbs, which includes insulation as well as hammock, tarp and suspension.
    Hammock + suspension: 24 oz
    Underquilt: 22.5 oz
    Top Quilt: 20 oz
    Tarp: 15 oz

The ultralight setup I quoted would be a total of 2 lbs 7 oz. Again you'd be giving up comfort factor, and it probably wouldn't be able to go down as slow a temperature as the heavier setup, but dang is that light.

Hammock + suspension (if you use dynaglide whoopie slings + MSH with lightweight toggles):8oz
    Underquilt: 12 oz
    Top quilt: 14.5 oz
    Tarp: 5oz

I'm almost convinced that the Warbonnet Blackbird is the way to go. Again I'm 6'1 and 175 lbs. But I have to ask why there are so many hammocks available in the $40.00 - $60.00 range. Where is the difference?

It's in the best of cottage industry design, manufacturing and quality. They've experimented with fabrics, design tweaks and have already made all the tough decisions for you.

I've tried four different hammock manufacturers (who shall remain nameless). The Warbonnet Blackbird (and Traveler) are the best of the bunch in my experience.

Best setup is the one that gets in the woods.

I'm sure you'd be happy with a $16 grand trunk hammock, wally world blue tarp and anything that keeps you warm.

That said... buy a Warbonnet blackbird or traveler
    +1

Try making a gathered end hammock before you do anything else out of a bed sheet or ripstop from a local vendor...just so you get the basic idea and see what you like. One thing I learned fast is to go longer than you think you need. Go 4 feet longer than you are tall.

Listen to the wisdom of the obsessive... er experts here. They will save you from the mistakes I made which led me to buy a lot more gear than I need. That being said, I love all my gear.

Actually it would drive me crazy to know that I could have something better, so I think I'll start with a WBBB.

    Thanks everybody!
