So I saw the recent thread about the Lafuma X800 sleeping bag on sale at REI for $39 w/ free shipping for members. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=33207
I bought one and it arrived yesterday. Upon receipt I weighed the bag & stuff sack and it came in at 27.7 oz. I then started cutting and stitching and 2 hours later I have a 20.9 oz true summer top quilt.
Basically I removed the zippers, hood and drawstring. Before cutting I sewed a stitch line on the good side of the intended cut line to keep the layers and insulation together. Then I just cut next to the stitch line removing the unwanted parts. I then trimmed all cut edges with DIY bias tape and reinforced the junction at the closed footbox w/ 1 1/2" wide grosgrain. All in all pretty easy mod to save 7 oz and make the sleeping bag more convenient to use.
