DuctTape beat me to it. Grandma Gatewood was an original in many ways-the first woman to thru-hike the AT, wore Keds sneekers, used a lightweight pack (gunny sack thrown over shoulder and the shower curtain tarp, wool blanket as wrap and quilt, etc.
Of course Ray Jardine took Grandma Gatewood's and began Golite-wonder if he ever gave her any credit?
Anyway Grandma Gatewood was also know as the biggest yogi on the trail and was always munching off others-this according to several AT historians.
Matters not, she HHOH and thru-hiked the AT again later in life.

if you have a sewing machine and weight isn't a big deal wally world have outdoor product 5x7 tarps for $10...you could get 2 and sew them together and have a big tarp...someone one here did this... i can't remember who
i have one here and for $20 for the 2 and some time it would be a nice tarp for someone just starting out
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Smile I would not try it.

I would not try the shower curtain. I am 59 years old; I believe shower curtains were made of tougher stuff in the days of my youth. Maybe thicker, maybe better quality. Most of today's shower curtains are made of flimsy, cheesy, low-quality plastic.

Get a good hammock, a good UQ, and a good TQ. Get a good tarp.

Keds? I loved 'em, spent all day in them, every day but Sunday for the first 20 years of my life---but I was young then, and invulnerable.

I am not sure my feet could still handle the lack of support and the lack of protection from rocky trails. I will keep my Merrell Switchbacks and my wool socks---I never got a blister while wearing wool socks.

Raincoat? Good idea. I did hear of one guy who did not take a tarp or a tent. He had a huge rain poncho, which he used at night as his tent/groundcloth. I think he had a double-thickness synthetic blanket. I seem to recall that he avoided Winter. In a pinch, a fellow could just put on the rain poncho and huddle up for the night against a rock or tree, even if it was raining.

Grandma Gatewood! I had not heard that name in ages! What a gal! What a legend!

I made the tarp using the two Walmart 5x7s. It was really quick, and super inexpensive. Walmart also sells Coleman branded seam sealer for $3.

I used Gutermann Sew-All thread from JoAnn. It's 100% poly thread, and generally described as pretty high quality.

I remember seeing a video of a solo trip a guy took (out West somewhere, I think (???)) and used a shower curtain as a tarp over his hammock. Maybe he'll chime in or someone can remember where to find it... .

    Found it!
