    DIY Down Diff Cut UQ

Well, I finished one of two down underquilts I am making! I have actually finished all of the other one but stuffing the down and closing the edges. This one is 46" X 72" X 2.5" baffles (I am only 5'9", so the 72" is more than enough length). It lofts to about 3.5". I used a bloomberg pillow (supposedly 800fp, i think it was a little less but not much and almost no feathers) for down and used 13 oz of down. (pillow was $47 off ebay and still have prob 7-8oz left!) I am going to order a little more down from stormcrow to finish the other quilt. It is the same design, but 46"X67"X2.5" baffles (its my wife's and she is 5'3") I made these differential cut and used 1.5" grosgain for the long edges and 1" grosgain for the ends. I think they will work great, but since it summertime here in MS, it will be awhile before I really get to test them... It weighs 26 oz including the stuff sack and suspension. I got all of the 1.1 oz, grosgain, thread, noseeum, and shockcord from BWDD, thanks Scott. I am very happy with it! BTW down gets everywhere!! I used my old tent to get in to try and control it some, which worked but my wife is still laughing at all the random pieces of down floating all over the house!

That looks really awesome dude! Great idea with doing it in a tent. What else are you going to do with it anyways? Fantastic job!

    Nice work Harrel

You'll be happy with those, congrats on your DIY.

Your wife laughs at downy mess round the house? Hold on to that one, shes a keeper! Has she got a sister?

I notice that your darts seem quite short, ( I made my first full UQ with short darts too) any particular reason? Does it snug well?

Turnerminator, The reason for the short 'darts' is that I really didn't make darts just folded the outside section so it would be the same length as the smaller inside. It snugs really well because the inside layer (being smaller) takes all the pressure and is the part that actually snugs against the hammock. This is why I made it differential cut, so it could be pulled up pretty tight without compressing the down any. It's not really tapered any at the ends, just uses the drawstring to cinch it up.
    Did that make any sense?

My thoughts exactly!! I will have use for it at least one more time as hammocks are not allowed at Philmont scout ranch.

Loud and clear mate. With less shaping, the Uq will not naturally follow the curve of a gathered end hammock as well. I made my short darts to work with a bridge hammock as well as my gathered's but it sits perfectly well, I cant tell the difference between the short and long darts for warmth.
    Enjoy your new downy wonder.
