    Nylon v Polyester tarp material stretch

    A discussion on BCUK has posed a question;

    SilverHill forge has noticed that the fabric that his Maccat is made from seems less stretchy than his DD polyester tarp
    Why does the Maccat ripstop tarp feel less stretchy than the Polyester DD tarp?

    Its common knowledge that polyester has less stretch than nylon, so why does the maccat perform differently?

    Is it the impregnation of the nylon that changes the materials properties or is it the grid?

    I have two large tarps that I made useing the same OWF material. I cat cut the edges on one and the other is a rectangle. My cat cut one stays tighter pitched than the plain rectangle one. So I'd say to not only look at what materials a tarp is made from, but to also look at the design of it.

    Could it be the edge binding that helps to "stiffen" and make the design structurally sound(just throwing out ideas here - i am on deeeeep water here)

    How are you detecting the stretch? In other words... is it by grabbing the fabric and pulling with your hands... or the way the tarp pitches? If the latter, the design of the tarp is crucial. A catcut pitches tighter and stays tighter than a rectangular tarp. Or even than a straight edge hex tarp. A catcut allows you to use the natural stretch of the bias to pull the fabric tighter and if pitched with skill it stays tighter through the night.
    I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    Thanks for the replies guys

    Yes Rev, it is based on the feel of it by hand.
    It was an observation made by Silverhill Forge that his maccat fabric feels less stretchy, even when not pitched ,which goes against my understanding of these materials properties.

    I know that some nylons are treated in various ways to increase the modulus, just wondering whether the maccat ripstop treatment had altered the stretch by such a large factor.
    Can you add anything to this Silverhill?
