    Insultex question

I know there are several Threads on Insultex, but feeling lazy today. I’m thinking about getting some insultex and making a Summer TQ and UQ with it. I wonder just how low of temp a single layer of insultex will keep u warm. I’m mainly thinking of those days we get a rain shower in the evening/night and it cools everything down.

Another options to think of is maybe sewing 1.1 or .9 to bottom and leaving one side open for the UQ and put the Insultex side against the hammock. If the Insultex is light enough and need just alittle more warmth, add Velcro on edge in places and add another sheet of insultex on top of the open end.

For the TQ I would still need to put 1.1 or .9 on both sides of insultex…

Do u think a single layer would do the job? Thoughts / opinions

IX for a top quilt is reportedly a bit clammy, so what you might consider is a layer of IX, some 1.1 on the outside and the lightest weight fleece you can get on the inside. Just my two cents. For UQ you may want 2 layers, one just doesn't seem like it'd be enough.
    Good luck,

Thanks Red,,, I also emailed an engineering friend and he also recommended using 2 layers

Well, I'm no engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I use 2 layers of IX with an UQP from 2QZQ as my underquilt. One layer wasn't enough below about 65* for me.

I also have a two layer IX TQ made by Mac as an early prototype. It does get clammy! Trying to decide whether to cover with nylon and taffeta (aka the Light Hiker Bedroll) or just use a fleece cover under the IX TQ.

    More practice this weekend.

    Good Luck.

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn but I did make a double layer IX TQ with Joanne's ripstop all around. IT IS HOT! My intention was a summer quilt but the dang thing is way to warm for summer. Probably can start using it at 50* and lower.

Soooooooo, I made another summer quilt with BWDD breathable ripstop and a lining of a wool/polyester blend. Perfect summer quilt for me.

Thanks for the info all,,, I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express either.. But may someday...

It sounds like 2 layers for a Summer Underquilt is the way to go. I normally need something below 75F and have DOWN quilts. I just dont need them for Summer. As far as a TQ, I may look at the lightest wt fleece.

I use 2 layers between breathable 1.1 ripstop as a summer UQ and TQ. I like it, I am a warm sleeper and it gets me down to the mid to upper 30's. When it is warm, I just throw it off me and loosen the UQ on the ends to let some air through.

I really like the stuff, I think it is most effective as an UQ. As a TQ I think it can be a bit clammy, but I like the light weight and my whole rig is camo.

They are full length, I paddle for the most part, so weight is not an issue. I have not weighed them, but I do know compared to other options, including down they seem lighter. I also like the ease with which they can be used. Very durable. I combined my IX UQ with my 3 season Phoenix from stormcrow and took it down to below 0 and stayed toasty warm. Had foam pad under my feet.

I think for the money, it is incredibly versatile and an easy DIY project. I did roll it several times at the head end on the TQ to make a draft tube of sorts, and sewed a foot box in it. In winter, I use the TQ for a hammock sock, hang it over the ridge line and it really increases the temps and eliminates drafts inside. I leave a little vent hole open at the head end and have had no issues with condensation.

What I like about it paddling is that if it gets wet, it is a non issue. Hardly retains any water, just shake it off.

It does not compress, however the warmth to weight ratio, at least from my perspective, makes it a very useful option. I also use down,
    and sometimes both together.
