Politics don't have anything to do with the gear and kits that he sells, although I admit it's a distraction. I stocked up on a TON of his thread. Great stuff. I made a RayWay quilt once from one of his kits. It's a really nice quilt and I still have it, but it does not compress all that well.

He definitely was a pioneer in both the UL movement and climbing. A lot of the gear out there stemmed from his ideas and gear. Ever hear of the brand GoLite? Founded on his ideas. (Granted, some products have strayed away from the original.) Don't have one of the quilts though, but I'd imagine it'd work just fine for a top insulation.

[QUOTE=bigfoot2;465037]I used to use Ray's stuff until i found out how nutty the guy really is. He finally took down his "What Really Happened" page (yeah...Bush blew up the towers on 9/11) on his site, under pressure and loss of money. His gear is ok, but not the best and seems to be copied from just about everyone. For me, it's a matter of principle. I just don't want my money going to support that kind of agenda.

Ah, I see you are from Eugene.

Some how I missed the "What Really Happened". Egos are a very intersting thing.:

I don't know much about ray jardine, anything really, but this guy just made my night. I only wish I could write a piece like this:

I have to admit, I like the guy just for that article.

    took from Grandma

Most all of his ideas were used years prior by Grandma Gatewood...he could have given her some credit
And no matter how bright/ingenius he seems, no matter how many expeditions he's done-he still sleeps on the ground.

I always thought he did credit her, must be my misinterpretation but I do love your second point

My first DIY project was a Ray-Way quilt. I certainly don't agree with everything Ray says but the guy does made a lot of people stop and re-think their gear.

He once did a kite trek across Greenland. Yeah, had a kite that pulled him and his gear on a pulk sled!

Yes, good and funny article with some valid points. Especially regarding how being influenced by experts in so many things in life. For us, that point would get down to HYOH, or as he put it in that article "walking your own path" I suppose.

But OTOH, at age 63, I am actually able to look back at various advice and influences ( from elders mostly ) which I rejected- sometimes even ridiculed because I knew I was much more enlightened. And looking back I wish I had listened to much of it. Peoples experiences over many generations about what works and what doesn't can often be most likely correct. I proved some of it correct by rejecting it and doing the opposite!

Re: the quilts poor compressibility- they are synthetic, I think maybe Climashield or used to be. That negative might have some positives for UQ use. And of course, if you read further on his website, he presents the reasons why, after a few really bad experiences far from civilization, he decide against down even though he is otherwise supposed to be a UL Guru.

Did not know about his far out "political" views, but really not surprising. And probably really not all that uncommon among the over all class of wilderness loving, backpacking population. I imagine views are all over the board even here at HF, which is why we are not allowed to go there. Too much heat would result.
