This stuff is completely new to me!

I was reading Backpacker Mag yesterday and saw an ad for a Clark's hammock. I went to their site and was very intrigued. I spent an hour or so looking at their products and then did some more surfing around and discovered this site and the myriad other brands, DIY kits, and just the entire thing is sort of overwhelming. I have never seen people camping in hammocks before and I "think" I go alot. Lots to learn. I want one but don't want to buy one and then regret it so I'm sure I'll be asking questions and doing a lot of research here.

Thanks Shug. Funny enough I just finished watching your video for newbies (Essentials 1). So you made your own hammock (from what I can tell?) I'll check your "curious" video too. Thanks for responding.

There are a lot of ways to go, at some point you'll want to consider something in the 'luxury-line' - designed creatively to make them more comfortable, but usually above $100.

Before you make a huge investment, consider some of the more affordable options. I'm a fan of Grand Trunk for their low prices and high quality products. The GT Skeeter Beeter has a built in bug net, is the asym style hammock, sells for $40 and is less than a pound. If you need something a little roomier, the Skeeter Beeter Pro is on $20 more. Other companies offer affordable options, but I'm most familiar with GT. I spent $150 on my first hammock and it really wasn't for me. It wasn't recommended by anyone here mind you, but I still ended up getting a GT and loving it.

With a few simple mods you can make an affordable hammock even better. Check out www.myDIYgear.com for a few examples.

It's only overwhelming if you try to take it all in at once. Get something inexpensive and go to that hang that bigbamaguy posted to see everything else. OR if you've got the extra cash - most people here will tell you can't fail with the Warbonnet Blackbird. If you end up not liking it you can resell it here for $15 short of what you paid for it and someone will buy it I'm sure.

Welcome to the forum. Love the handle name. Is that a Phish reference "bag it tag it" from Reba? If you have no clue what im talking about never mind.

Any ways welcome. Shug's videos are a great place to start. Also if you can make it to a group hang and check out some of this hammock gear before purchasing is always helpful. Read up lots and if you are a DIY person then that''s a great route to go.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
