Weight of Hancock Ripstop on Sale?

Hancock has ripstop on sale for $3.49

Anybody know anything about it? Weight and / or coatings?

I'm trying to find some colors...

That's where I buy all of my hammock body ripstop from, and it is usually not coated. It kind of appears 'shinier' on one side but is very breathable and all of it I have found is 1.9 oz/sq yard.

I once asked the lady working what denier it was and she looked at me like I was speaking another language.

I've noticed differences from bolt to bolt at my Joann's. Some bolts seem lighter than others in the same color with the same description. I have not weighed them, just observations from the look and feel. May be worth comparing at Hancock to see if theirs look the same.

When I picked up a few yards the lady working there had no idea either. So took it home and weighed the whole lot and after a bit of math discovered that it was in fact 1.9oz

As for JoAnn's I didn't bother as they wanted twice as much for what appeared to be the same fabric so not sure of the specific weight of their material.

For Joann's you have to use the coupons and catch things on sale. Almost every week there is a 50% or 60% off coupon for fabric in their paper ad. I just got some camo, but not ripstop, in their clearance (red tag) area for $1.50/yd. Was $3.00/yd and they had a sale for 50% off red tag prices.

Ditto! Got the exact same results from Hancock ripstop.

I picked up 6 yards of this material a few weeks ago (the navy color) to make a first "trial DIY" tarp from. And I noticed the same thing. It's a wee bit shinier on one side.

My question is... which side should be the topside (i.e. weather side) of the tarp and which side should be the underside? Does it matter?

I will probably Scotch-Guard it anyway, but I didn't know if it mattered which side was out.

The one-side shiny is from calendaring (hot rollers) causes the threads to soften and flatten out... It makes the material downproof.

The fabric is DWR, and will shed drizzle, but eventually leak. You'll need to do more than scotchguard it if you get any decent rain, as hard rain will mist through the fabric. As far as which side up, I don't think it matters.

There's a DIY Silnylon thread here, folks have been thinning down silicone and treating non-waterproof fabrics with good results.
