twist ties would work. they rust and stain stuff, they'll punch little holes in things and are easy to lose.
+1 on fig.8, i use mt thumb and pinky. leave a few inches and wrap that around the intersection of the fig 8s and tuck the end. leave'm attached to tarp and stuff it all, or slide the skins over it all.

I do exactly whats in the link that oldgringo pointed to. very easy for me - I'd rather keep lines attached.

Just had my gear hanging in the yard today - took this pic when I just brought it in.

    I see...thanks, Shug.

I've been using a method I got from my iPhone app...Grog Knots Animated
Rope care > "Coil Unattached Rope"

Works well and has a nifty way of securing the rope bundle so that it does not come undone.

DD, I don't have an iPhone (yet) but is the method you saw similar to this?

That's not only the same method...it seems to be the online version of the exact software I have... I didn't know that existed...

I begin coiling the lines from the loose end, and then secure them using the illustrated method once it gets a few inches from the tarp.

Easy to "do" and "undo" but just as important...very secure

I put a taught line hitch in the end - wrap the bulk around my hand and put the hitch around the loops on my hand and snug it up.
