Give it a try for us. The worst case is it doesn't work and you have to cut a section out of the center and end up with 2 whoopie slings and a length of amsteel.
As always, a video would be appreciated.

i know this thread is over a year old but i'd like to clarify the loopie case, im a professionnal tree climber and i work with this kind of splice. I can tell you loopies are safe enough for hammocks, heres a video on how to use em properly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joOU8MvktL0
and a thread on an arborist forum regarding strenght loss and break tests: http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/showfl...0&fpart=1&vc=1
I dont think it would "if!!" you used prusiks to tighten the tarp against the lines. It wouldnt matter if you had load on the hammock or not. This setup is similar to putting your tarp and hammock on the same tree straps. I understand exactly what the idea is. I haven't played with it though. I dont have any extra amsteel on hand.
The down side to this is if you dont use tree straps around here the rangers will chew you a new one. I understand the reasoning behind this though.
This is my suggestion, take it with a grain of salt. Think of it as a tarp ridge line to begin with. Then add you hammock to it using decender rings or an attachment of your choice. As stated above you tighten the tarp the way Shug shows in many of his vids using a prusik knot and slidding them to tension the tarp. The problem with this idea is being able to attach the hammock. I would never trust a prusik to hold under my weight. So any ideas on how to attach the hammock?
I hope I'm grasping what he is shooting for.
