Jerry,
Yep, them good old days! Guess Shug will check in here soon, but sadly Cannibal won't. This is about the time Cannibal was taking the 1st( I think 1st) torso sized Yeti style UQs from WB to well below zero, the one made with removable layers of CS. Then seems like he might of taken the down version to -26F or colder, something like that. So I don't guess we will know what might have changed for Cannibal, but Shug has not only pushed the envelope with UQs (remember his 1st trip reported at extreme temps of minus 26F, accompanied by kwpapke in a souped up HH Super Shelter?), but lately has become a home made PeaPod(sleeping bags + quilts rigged PeaPod style) aficionado. One of the very few major fans of that approach, but he has certainly proven it's merits. We pod fans are few in number seems to me. There are a few more folks we have not heard a lot from lately, a few who have pushed the same extremes in hammocks as Shug. A few of them are pod fans also. And then there was - oh heck I can't pull the name up right now? He did some tests with a JRB hammock Hut made for wood stove use and went way on down there, up in Canada, sleeping without the stove? It will come to me in a minute.
It was fun to read this old thread.

One example of change and progress is Shug saying he likes the Big Agnes pad. A lot has changed since then. Good read if you are a Shug follower.
And look at the dates. Shug wasn't even 6 months in!

Thanks Shug! Sounds good.
Old thread lives. I gave that BA insulated pad away for a Scout raffle. It was good and warm. Weighed over a pound!

Much as I would love to buy an underquilt, having just splurged on a Blackbird and Superfly, my funds are pretty depleted. I tried a combination of blue CC foam pad, truck window sunshade with a half z-rest lying crossways under my shoulders for -1° to -3° night last night. I was in a -15° sleeping bag and was fine until about 6 a.m, when mild CBS started. While I'm sure that the UQ option is significantly more comfortable, I'm just curious if anyone knows the R-value comparison of a Winter UQ and how many blue CC sleeping pads it would take to have the same effect. Again, this is not so much about cushy comfort as it is about functional comfort. Thanks.
