Amsteel question - core or no core?

I just purchased some Amsteel from Redden Marine in 2 colors, red and green. The red is definately hollow braid and feels "flat". The green has a very small core of strands running through it. Question is, will the core make a difference when making a whoopie sling? It doesn't appear to take up much room. Have they changed the manufacturing process?

It sounds like they shipped the wrong item (green).

    1. Ask Redden Marine. They have a pretty good reputation for customer service.
    2. Pull out the core strands and subject them to some testing. Do they melt or deteriorate when heated? How hard are they to cut? Do they behave like the green outer strands? Like the blue amsteel?

When you find out, please post. Thanks.

Some of the larger diameter Amsteel

has a very small bundle of yarns running through the center. Is this what you have? I just cut them and pull them out. They do not, as you notes, take up much space. They can be used in placeof a pulling wire to make your whoopies.

Yes , it looks like a dozen hair-thick strands that take up virtually no room in the core. The slickness of the rope and compsition looks like the red but has those wispy strands in the middle. Maybe I'll let my son hang first

Those may be what samson has started adding to their larger lines. Its a tracer to distinguish actual amsteel blue from knock offs. Is what runs in the center green and red? I havent noticed any in any of the group buy rope yet, and its all 7/64 and 1/8.

Yup, it's red and green and about as thick as dental floss. This was in the 7/64 in green rope I got. Other than the core it looks and feels exactly as the red that was coreless. I went ahead and made a couple of whoopies out of it after pulling the core. I even risked my butt, literally, and hung in the yard with it. Didn't notice any difference in stretch, wear, or feel as compared to the red version. I saved the core to use for stitching some straps since it's stronger than all get out.

Amsteel is very slick...so much so that many "classic" knots are unreliable for use with it. I have similar concerns, re: stitching. Keep an eye on it.
