    Guide gear vs. WB tarp?

Ok guys, I am really excited. I am about to order a new WBBB dbl 1.7. This will be my first "real" camping hammock. My dilemma is I already have a GG 12x12, but it is rather large and I have no idea how to set up a tarp properly with a hammock. I am really thinking of ordering a new tarp from WB with the hammock. Probably the big mambajamba. Am I just wasting money? Should I get another brand, I am too indecisive. Any help yall provide will help. I plan on hitting the pay button in the morning.

I say use the GG tarp that you have...there a really nice tarp for the money
and it will work fine with your new WBBB .....

it takes practice to get good at setting up your new setup so spend a afternoon in the back yard playing around with it

    and have fun
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Have you added webbing tie outs to the center? See: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...uide+gear+tarp
The guide gear tarps don't come with tie outs where you actually need them to set it up A-frame style. You can set it up asym (tree<>tree) or you can also use the ties just off of center and get a sort of A-frame.

It is the same on this side
I set it up like that last week and it works, but I sewed on some ties so I could use it A-frame style and close the doors(the best part about it IMHO). The WB tarp is going to be allot lighter, but I wouldn't buy one until you know how to setup the one you have. Good luck! I hope this helps.

Will weight be an issue for you? A WB tarp would you a little weight. You can always try what you have first and then get the WB tarp later.

The weight was the main factor. I really like the GG tarps, I bought 2 of them. I was just thinking it may be a little overkill for the summer with such a big tarp. I'll just wait and get a new tarp when I get a little better at all this and I know what I need, if I really do need a new tarp. I could also save $10 as a package, but mainly I just thought I would buy it all just 1 time and be done. Thanks for the help guys.

I have the guide Gear 12x12 tarp. You can still get them on sale for $20 on the net. I found that you do need to add some additional tie outs to it, but when you do, you have total flexibility with it and can use it in fairly extreme situations. For example, it is possible to fold in the ends similar to the more expensive models or the Griz beak.

Checkout this video of my winter camping trip last week. You can see how I used the Guide Gear tarp successfully in high wind and snowy conditions. I also show how it can be set up patio style with a couple of hiking poles.

Here's the link to buy the GG tarp for $19.97. Hard to beat that price.

Not bad for a 12x12 that 2 hammocks can sleep under.
    Nowhere near ultralight either.

That's the same deal I got. What a good price. It took 3 months to get here, but well worth the weight. I guess I'm going to have to get my wife to teach me how to sew on some more tabs. I can't wait to get the new setup!
