Camp Seat/Gear Hammock/Pack Cover DIY

Just an update. This chair has worked out really well for me both as a chair and as a gear hammock. I did end up removing the omni-tape keeping the pocket closed and replaced it with a drawstring. Saved a little bit of weight and closes up a lot better.

This looks awesome. Although I do have a thought on a possible "improvement".

What if you added small pockets to each side for the handles of your trekking poles to fit into them forming arm rests to each side and if crossed under the chair could help prevent any hip squeezing that may, or may not occur? Just a thought.

Otherwise awesome multifunctional peice of gear. Will definitly be making myself one of these in the future.

Well, sounds interesting, but am having difficulty visualizing how that would work. Because it is made out of silnylon, it is rather slippery, and because of that, when I use it as a recliner, I keep a pad in the sitting area, which provides enough friction to keep you in one place. It also serves to keep the bottom of the chair spread open, so I really haven't noticed any hip squeeze. There is a little shoulder squeeze, but it isn't too bad.

I'll keep it in mind, though, as improvements are always welcome.

I like the idea of shock cord in the seams to close up the gear when hanging and to double as a pack cover.... very nice.

Looks most awesome as is for sure!! I would want to figure out how to hang it from a tree and have it as a chair without any other attachment. It appears I may have to make one of these my own self!

I have received a number of PMs where folks have seen this thread and are attempting to build their own gear hammock/camp seat, etc. There is another thread that contains links to videos as well as further discussion on the construction details, and I wanted to include a link to that here so that folks would have all of the information.

There are three videos in the beginning that discuss the kit as well as some of the deployment options. In entry #19, there is another video that deals with construction details, and in entry #25, there is a diagram of the shock cord routing.

SteelerNation, this is great stuff! I love the idea of having a camp chair, and that it doubles as a pack cover is even better! I did make a modification to the corners that makes running the shockcord easier.


First I cut off each corner at a 45* angle. I used a 3" square and cut along the diagonal. In retrospect, that was probably a bit too much...


Double fold that and run a (straighter!) stitch along the edge.


Double over and sew the long edges one at a time. Make sure you use a big enough hem on the top and bottom edges so that it's easy to run the whoopie through there later! (Don't ask me how I know this....)


Run the shockcord through the hems, all the way around, and voila!

Great job. This inspired me to make one myself. I made mine out of 1.1 digital ACU. I can use it for a camo pack cover for instances when I want to be more subdued. My pack is Int'l orange already. Thanks for the inspiration. Pics to soon follow.

I have been toying with the idea of also its capability to be used as an UQ shelf, connecting the whoopies to the hammocks toggles and cinching the gear hammock "tight" to the bottom of the hammock and stuffing the cavity with a sleeping bag or what not.
