Security deposit.
I'd say the best way is to do like some folks here do. Buy whatever it is you want play with (hammock, tarp, stove, pack, etc.) and turn around and sell it after your done "testing".
Shipping both ways and the security deposit on a rented item would be the killer. And the initial cost of rentable equipment to the vendor.
As was already stated, make it to a hang. Best way to see lots of different gear, IMO. Or cannibal's backyard.

The other thing worth noting is that some firms (like Clark for example) offer a 30 day no quibble money back guarantee
Thanks for all the input. I wasn't really looking at it for a business opportunity, just for forum members to share gear. But now that I am aware of the hangs, I guess I will read some of those threads to find one near me.
The only one I've seen in Texas is down near Houston. I don't mind the drive, but the humidity and skeeters are enough to keep me away. Maybe we can get a North Texas area hang?
I'd be in for that sometime.

There's a local club in my area that rents gear including an HH or two. So it may be worth it to check out that avenue. Personally I'd rather have my own. If you don't like it or want to try something else most of them hold their value well enough to get you investment back. But attending a group hang is really your best bet.

The fall hang last year was Fairfield (only a few hrs south of you, not sure where the spring one will be yet.) There is also one up in Oklahoma thats probably 4ish hrs from you (guessing based on my estimated drive time and my drive time to Fort Worth (which I would be going around) its the weekend after the TX one if memory serves.
