    Quick Detach Ridge Line

Found a way to make a ridge line that is quick and easy to separate for those times you want to lounge without the ridge line cutting across your back or the back of your neck.

This method will allow you to quickly and simply open the ridge line and then snap the ridge line back in place.

I used one of these key ring disconnects.

I removed the rings and hooked the ridge line directly to the disconnect ends. I figured the rings just add length and are probably the weakest parts. Don't really know how much force the disconnect will take, but figure it would be a LOT more than the 1.75 mm Lash-It I use for the ridge line, since the forces are centered down the disconnect and the metal would have to fail for the contraption to fail.

Sorry no pictures - no digital and not willing to waste 21 frames on the roll to get 2 or 3 pics.

Looks good, I was looking at ways to detach the ridgeline for lounging. Might have to pick one up this evening from my local.

Cool idea TeeDee. Any chance you know the weight of the device?

    Just weighed one.

    With rings: 19.3 g / 0.68 oz

    without rings: 13.5 g / 0.47 oz

    Heavier than my micro-biners: 3.1 g / 0.1 oz

But I tried the micro-biners on the ridge line several years back and had 2 bent totally out of shape before I decided that they just wouldn't work reliably. 1 was from BPL and the second (identical) was from another on-line source.

    Hey TeeDee,

Pretty cool stuff! Your solution looks much more elegant than what I came up with.

I did something similar on my ENO DN that has whoopie slings run thru the sewn channels. I used the small steel quick links from Lowe's. They are <$1.00 and rated at 200 lbs. working weight. Seem relatively light too. Unfortunately, I don't have a scale to confirm my guess.

The one advantage I have found with a semi permanent link for the ridge line is when you have two trees less than the ideal width for tree straps/whoopie slings. I have found that I can attach the adjustable loop of the whoopie sling back to the quick link and then loop the entire whoopie over the spike in the tree straps. This effectively cuts the length of the bury in half on each end resulting in about a 12 inch overall reduction. This allows me to use trees just a bit wider than the length of my ridge line.

Yes they're are robbing us over here! As long as someone will pay it, they will charge it (the american way) No doubt could find them cheaper though.

I think they only cost pennies over here, I'll see if I can dig some out if there's any interest

I'm currently using a screw gate shackle from Lowes.

I clipped the zip tie off of the shroud on the end of my hennessey and threaded the shackle into the mix when I added my UCR and lash-it. When I replaced the shroud I used a bit of 1/8th shock cord with a zeppelin bend rather than a another zip tie. The shroud covers the shackle almost completely but I can yank it back and release the ridge line and via a tiny hole I melted into the but netting I can not only disconnect it I can choose to sleep inside of or on top of the bug netting.

I need to upgrade to something a bit lighter. I also need to redo my ridge line as I set it up like a whoopie sling so I can adjust it, but even at its smallest Its longer than the stock hennessey ridgeline. oops

YEah - they are expensive at countycomm.

Look around locally. Places that carry ky ring fobs a lot of times carry these. I think Lowes has or had them.
